Boo! The Dog Blog

Crampons changed my life!

Granted, the ship has probably sailed now…but I couldn’t write another blog piece without mentioning the greatest addition to my dog-walking attire.. Crampons!!!

Of course, its a phrase that I never thought I would write or say but, indeed, “Crampons changed my life”.

Why?

Interestingly, in our corner of the UK, we’ve had quite a bit of snow recently. We don’t seem to get a lot these days, but it came down quite heavily during the first week of the New Year.

It is fair to say that, quite soon that same snow turned into ice, and extremely hard, slippy ice and compacted ice at that.

It has to be said that my beloved walking boots, less than 12 months old, a well known make but not astronomically espensive, were extremely slippy. So much so that, I fell on my backside twice during one early evening walk with Boo.

In fact, Ifell twice, even though I was holding the hand of my other half. I hurt my wrist quite a lot.

I wore my wellies for our walk the next evening and, of course, slipped again.

Didn’t want to pay a fortune for non-slip walking boots (if there is a thing). And I certainly did not want to pay £100 plus for the crampons on sale in the ‘outdoor’ shops.

Decided to take a risk on a cheap set of crampons on a well-known, huge website which also delivers.

The result has literally changed my life !!!! Crampons have really changed my life! ….Well, a little bit!

I felt so confident, crunching through the compacted snow and ice, safe in the knowledge that my ‘blades’ were keeping me stable and safe. I even ran through the snow … for about a couple of yards!

Boo, of course, ever sure-footed, was unaffected by the ice – the odd slip on one paw was saved by the balance of the remaining three.

I don’t know any crampon producers, sellers, marketers. I am not trying to sell you any. Just wanted to let you know that there is an alternative for the ordinary dog walker (non-mountiain climber) to amble sure-footed through the compacted snow and ice.

They make a great crunching noise too!!

In addition, I am also very aware that you often “get what you pay for”.

I’ll let you know if they fall apart !!!
